Introduction to Mental Health First Aid

Just like physical first aid and health and safety, mental health first aid is becoming vitally important in the workplace.

 

One in four people in the UK Will have a mental health problem at some point in the lifetime. In 2018, in Great Britain, there were 595,000 cases of work-related stress, depression or anxiety leading to 15,400,000 working days lost. As we return from coping with Covid – 19 and lockdown eases, mental health and dealing with mental health may become vitally important to the survival of many businesses.

 

Mental health is about how we think, feel and behave. Anxiety and depression are the most common mental health problems. They are often a reaction to a difficult life event such as bereavement, but can also be caused by work related issues, financial worries and relationship issues.

 

Often people suffering from mental health issues find it very difficult to talk to work colleagues or supervisors, fearing the stigma associated with mental health.
